Celebrating the Life of Alan D. Nemlich

ALAN DAVID NEMLICH

September 3, 1929 – September 4, 2013

The last thing he did was catch a fish, off his beloved boat, on Flying Pond in Vienna ME, his wife of 63 years there to snap his picture – Alan D. Nemlich was full of life to the end.

Born in Lawrence NY, Alan was raised on a farm in Croton.  He graduated from Adelphi University in 1951 and served in the Air Force until 1955.  After his discharge he worked for his father in the furniture business, then opened his own store in Elmsford NY in 1959.  Regan of Westchester advertised itself as “Westchester’s only office furniture department store,” and became the largest office furniture store serving not only Westchester but New York City and Rockland County as well.  He served as chairman of the Better Business Bureau for those same three counties for an unprecedented two terms.

He became a charter member of the Elmsford Rotary Club in 1959, serving as president twice and as District Governor for Westchester, Bronx, Staten Island, and Bermuda in 1981-82.  Rotary was Alan’s religion, the place he found community and direction for his life.  He had perfect attendance for over 50 years, and always lived by the Four-Way Test.  Declaring “it’s payback time,” he devoted himself to community service projects through Rotary, the largest being a project to ship used hospital equipment to developing countries all over the world.

Having sold the business and retired in 1991, he and Magda left their long-time home in Scarsdale NY in 2010.  Thereafter they lived half the year in Allentown PA and half in Farmington ME.  In Farmington he found friends and a new Rotary club to devote himself to.

Alan was treasured by all who knew him for his irrepressible personality and sense of humor.  He loved boating, fishing, reading, home construction projects, westerns, football, and most of all his family.

In 1948 he met the love of his life, Magda Eichenwald, at a party and proposed two weeks later.  They were married in January of 1950.  They shared 63 loving years together, and were never apart.

He was predeceased by his parents, Bernard and Jeanetty, and by an older brother, Ian.  He is survived by his wife, Magda, brother Lee, and three children: daughter Karen Komlos and husband Dennis of Orefield PA, son Aryeh Ben-David and wife Sandra of Efrat Israel, daughter Victoria Cohen and husband Jonathan of Farmington ME; by grandchildren Jedd, Shachar, Ma’ayan, Amichai, Samuel, Yaniv, Rosa, Nell, Ra’aya, Eli, Lilach, and Miriam; and five great-grandchildren. Condolences and tributes may be shared on Alan’s memorial wall at www.wilesrc.com.

Nemlich – died at Lewiston, September 4, 2013, Alan David Nemlich, 84, of Farmington.  A celebration of life will be held at the home of Victoria and Jonathan Cohen, 146 Sunset Ave., Farmington, on Sunday, September 22, 11am-12noon.  Donations may be made to the Alan D. Nemlich Fund of the Farmington Rotary Club, PO Box 864, Farmington, ME 04938.  Cremation services have been cared for and provided by the Wiles Remembrance Center, 137 Farmington Falls Road, Farmington.

Tragedy Strikes our Rotary Family

Posted by Douglas R. Ibarguen on Aug 20, 2013
Today we learned of the tragic death of one our our past Rotary Youth Exchange Students, Pia Laine, of Finland. She was in a car accident and did not survive. While here in Farmington, she made many friends. She was hosted by Mike and Sue Cormier and also by Buzz and Taffy Davis. She spent a lot of great family time with Al and Sue Feather.

Pia will be greatly missed by all who were fortunate to meet her.

May she rest in peace.

Lac Megantic Relief Task Force Meets to Form Plans

Posted by Douglas R. Ibarguen on Jul 11, 2013
Message from DG Steve Johnson:
Call to District's Club
July, 2013
I was hoping to start off the year with smooth sailing but as is often the case, life got in the way. As I’m sure most of you are aware, the town of Lac Megantic in Quebec was the scene of a horrific accident this past Saturday night involving a fuel train that exploded in the heart of town destroying the downtown and resulting in the death of 5 (as of this date) and the missing of over 40 residents.
Lac Megantic is an town that is located close to the Maine border near Coburn Gore and it had a Rotary Club in our District for many years (until 1999). It is Farmington’s Sister City and is close to clubs in Zone 13 of our district. In response to this tragedy and in the spirit of ImageRotary service, District 7790 has formed a Lac Megantic Relief Task Force to coordinate Rotary support to the residents impacted by the accident. PDG Jean-Hugues Laflamme has graciously agreed to Chair this task force and he will be the District’s representative to the authorities in Lac Megantic and the greater Rotary world. I have been contacted by members of my District Governor class offering support from their districts and I will be putting them in contact with Jean-Hugues.
Should your club wish to support our efforts, I’m sure that support will be greatly appreciated. We will be establishing a funding mechanism and developing ways in which we can reach out to Rotarians in other Districts to help support our efforts. More news on this will be forthcoming
Thank you for bringing this effort to the attention of your clubs and I look forward to hearing from you.
Sincerely,
Steve Johnson, DG

Farmington Rotary was well represented this year at the 7790 District Conference with Tom, Ronnie, Doug, Cathy, Pauline, Sue and Al attending. Doug gave committee reports on the Foundation and reported back on his work at the Council on Legislation representing our district. Pauline was recognized and given a special ADG badge by incoming DG Steve Johnson and Al received his DGN pin and was recognized with an award by DG Serve for his efforts in creating Peace thru Communication.

Everybody had a great time and they all came away with some great ideas for our club's District Conference in 2016.

Update from Safe Passage Sponsor Child - Victor!

Posted by Regina Stefanelli on Jan 30, 2013

Members of the Farmington Rotary Club hold a Christmas card they received from their Safe Passage sponsor child Victor. Victor is one of 600 children who live in the Guatemala City Dump neighborhood who get a chance to go to school thru the generosity of sponsors.

The sponsorship allows student like Victor to attend public school, go to the Safe Passage enrichment center and get one hot meal a day. Victor's family will also receive food supplies at the end of each month if he has good attendance records for that month.

Mt. Blue Interact, UMF Rotaract and several Rotarians in our district also sponsor children.

It's life changing educational programs like these that help break the chains of poverty!Image

Want to Enjoy a Lifetime Friendship?

Posted by Douglas R. Ibarguen on May 20, 2012

RYE-2c-c

Yes, you can have a new lifelong friend by taking advantage of one of Rotary's best programs, Rotary Youth Exchange. Next school year will be no exception to the growing list of outstanding students we have hosted in Farmington. Seventeen year old Nicole Isabel Escobar Chavez of Quito, Ecuador will be with us next year. Nicole is a good student and loves dance, fashion and pets. She loves meeting new people and wants to be a lawyer because she believes in fighting for justice. She wants to live and learn in a different culture to be able to expand her horizons and create new life changing experiences that will be able to shape the way she thinks and sees from a different point of view.

Her mother said to us, "Nicole is well behaved. She is a very mature teenager with a big heart and her biggest strength is respect for her parents and family. Those who host her will not be getting an exchange student but gaining a daughter."

If this propect interests you, please contact one of the members of our Youth Exchange Committee,
Pauline Rodrigue, Glenn Kapiloff, Regina Stefanelli, or Al Feather. They will be happy to give you further details about this amazing opportunity to help change the world for the better one exchange student at a time and gain yourself a daughter at the same time.

Learn about The Rotary Foundation

through a humorous presentation by a Maine Rotarian.

Bring your questions

on grants, the foundation or the future vision program

to ask a panel of Maine “experts”.

(You can send along your questions in advance to:

Enjoy the fellowship

 of Rotarians during a luncheon.

Gov. LePage Signs "Rotary End Polio Now Week" Proclamation

Posted by Douglas R. Ibarguen on Oct 25, 2011

District Governor Deb Walters announced Monday, October 24 that Maine's Governor Paul LePage signed a proclamation declaring this week as "Rotary End Polio Week" in Maine. The picture shows DG Deb and DG Gary Spears of District 7780 with the Governor as he signed the proclamation. She added that through the hard work of many Rotarians, we are fortunate to have this happen and to have the National Assembly in Quebec make the same proclamation on Tuesday. There are many club events this week to raise awareness about our efforts to end Polio, and the district  will be issuing a press release about them. The recent news on our efforts to end Polio is good - the number of new cases is dropping. In India there has only been one new case since January. It would be wonderful if that girl was the last person to contract Polio in India.

At today's Rotary Meeting . . .
At today's Rotary meeting, I noticed that people had rotated more, thanks to Betty Jespersen's reminder that we are here to make good, solid connections with more than just those with whom we normally connect.  What a great group of people, building better friendships with good will!

Following breakfast, Adrian and Doug walked us through our usual agenda.  It is Groundhog's Day, and we have had the report that the Groundhog did see his shadow.  Although it was a bit confusing what this means, I think that in reality we can expect 6 more weeks of winter only because we haven't had any real winter yet.

Guests were introduced, of which there were five; Clayton is back, and he did a make-up in Rangeley; welcome back, Clayton!  We are at 85.07% for the week and 82.09% for the month; if it were an exam, I would call it a good, solid "B".
